Text Box: To be able to create astounding pictures with your machine, the anchor point should be about eight feet above the floor. You'll need to experiment with four variables: the length of the main pendulum, and the adjustable length of the lower pendulum chain, and the relative weights of the two pendulums. I am sure this could be figured out using math and science, but I have preferred to do it by experimentation.
It is possible, by looking at any harmonograph picture, to tell what adjustments need to be made to change the pictures. The most attractive and interesting pictures are created when the machine is set up to draw simple square (3:1) and triangle (2:1) pictures. It can be quite frustrating to find the proper settings for these simple ratios. For square pictures, the lower pendulum has to be quite short, while for triangular pictures, the lower pendulum has to be set much longer, often almost touching the floor.
